Cheryl and Vinson’s Mt Rainier sunset engagement was almost blocked out by the smoke of the summer, but instead, it created a radiant glow to every moment in the alpine.

The couple got married this fall, but wanted to have a summer engagement session that captured one of their favorite places in all its glory. We hoped for one of those clear evenings, but as has become too frequent in the summers, smoke filled the sky. We wandered around the Sunrise area, looking for spots that still told the story of the grandeur of this place.

Luckily, as the evening started to cool, the smoke began to settle into the valleys around, giving us an unobstructed view of the peak as glowed a beautiful peak.

Be sure to scroll to the very bottom. There is a photo of the couple holding hands looking up at the Milky Way. I didn’t really intend to make this. I wasn’t thinking about the stars, but on the way down from Sunrise, they were so bright. So we stopped for a second to snag a photo. As I looked at the back of my camera (which I had been using the top of the car as a tripod), I saw that familiar swath of stars crossing the screen. So, we adjusted and made this image. In case you’re wondering, this is just one photo. No stitching or compositing. Just pure PNW beauty.
